Baby Skin Care: How to Protect Your Newborn's Delicate Skin
by Cradle
Newborn skin is remarkable — and remarkably sensitive. It's thinner than adult skin, absorbs products more readily, and is more prone to dryness, irritation, and rashes. Here's how to care for it properly.
Newborn Skin: What's Normal
- Vernix: The white waxy coating at birth is protective — no need to rush to wash it off
- Peeling: Normal in the first 1–2 weeks as skin adjusts to the outside world
- Milia: Tiny white spots on the nose and cheeks — harmless and resolve on their own
- Newborn acne: Small pimples common at 2–4 weeks due to maternal hormones — usually clears without treatment
Bathing a Newborn
Until the umbilical cord stump falls off, stick to sponge baths. Newborns don't need daily baths — 2–3 times per week is plenty. Use a small amount of fragrance-free, hypoallergenic baby wash and warm (not hot) water.
Nail Care
Sharp newborn nails can scratch delicate skin — including their own face. Trim or file nails regularly using a gentle electric trimmer like TinyTrim, which uses a grinding action instead of cutting to keep nails smooth without any risk of nicks.
Nappy Rash Prevention
- Change diapers frequently — don't let baby sit in a wet or soiled nappy
- Apply a thin layer of barrier cream at each change
- Allow nappy-free time daily when possible
Eczema and Sensitive Skin
If your baby develops patches of dry, red, or itchy skin, they may have eczema. Use fragrance-free emollients, avoid known triggers, and consult your paediatrician if it persists.
